Week of 11/30-12/4

Monday we will be treated to a celebrity.  Brad Quinlin is an expert on the Civil War (actor & author) & will give a presentation about life during this time period.  Tuesday, we will review the graded test from the previous week & make test corrections.  Students need to complete the Reconstruction preview for homework (due Wednesday)… attachment below.  Wednesday-Friday, we will study the “Reconstruction Era” after the Civil War.  Students will test over this lesson #16 material (& a few local government concepts) on or about, Friday-12/11.  This is the due date for the PBL journal activity assigned many weeks back.  This counts as a test grade & details have been listed on previous postings. Week of 11/16-20

Monday we will continue our Civil War lesson #15 w/ a ppt. & an additional activity.  There will be an accompanying assignment for homework, which will be due Wednesday. Tuesday, we will have time to work on our LS/SS combination lesson.  Students were introduced to this last week & know that it is due Friday.  They are to compose a poem or ghost story which originates during the CW period & contains GA locations & characters.  Wednesday, we will conclude this lesson & review Thursday for the test.  Friday’s test will cover both the Antebellum lesson #14 & the Civil War Lesson #15.  Students should study the notes from these two lessons in their folder & those attached here.

Week of 11/9-13

Monday we will return graded assessments including test corrections from Unit 4 & this past Friday’s Quiz.  Monday through Wednesday, we will conclude activities enriching our Lesson #14 over the Antebellum Era.  Wednesday, we will take a short Quiz over this material & preview the Civil War (Lesson #15).  We will continue the Civil War Lesson through Friday & have a short Vocabulary Quiz over this material.  Next week, we will be conducting a cross-curricular activity for this Civil War lesson w/ the Language Arts dpt.  If students have electronic devices w/ internet access, they are encouraged to bring them for use in class.  Students should be working on a PBL “Journal” activity which covers the last 4 lessons of 1st Semester.  Students are to choose a character from the Westward Expansion lesson #13.  They are to write four 1/2 page paragraphs detailing a day in the life of this character, who should be identified by profession/name & date of each entry.  This should also be done for the current Antebellum Era, the next Civil War lesson, & finally, the Reconstruction Era.  This is the minimum & will earn a 70 as a test grade.  A 5th entry for each will raise the grade to an 80, a 6th one to a 90 & id an art piece is added to each … a 100.  This counts as a TEST grade & is not due until 12/11/15.  If students do a single paragraph each night & the visual on the weekend, they will have this 4 part PBL completed BEFORE the deadline & a single paragraph nightly is NOT overly time consuming.

Week of 11/2-6

Monday we will review last Friday’s test results, preview the “Antebellum Era” Lesson, & detail our next project.  Tuesday through Thursday, we will be investigating the political, economic, & societal changes impacting GA & the rest of the country from the early to the mid 1800’s.  We will review for then take a Quiz over this material on Friday & later grade it in class.  During part of the lesson time this week, students will be able to work on their “Journal” Projects.  Details will be attached later, but students have had this PBL explained.  Students should be generating rough drafts of journal entries from someone living in the time period we have just studied (1789-1840).  Students should also be reading nightly Ch 7 in the “Peach” textbook (pp 206-249).

Week of 10/26-30

Monday we will return last Friday’s graded Quiz (over the “Age of Expansion”) & conclude our study of Lesson #13 w/ several activities.  Tuesday & Wednesday we will revisit our Early Gvt. lesson #12 w/ several activities in preparation for Friday’s test.  Thursday we will review for Friday’s test over both Early Gvt & the Age of Expansion.  Friday we will take this test so, please study your folder assignments from lessons #12 & 13.  In eClass, see items attached for the weeks covering lessons 12 & 13 to prepare for Friday’s test.

Week of 10/19-23 … ITBS week, adjusted schedule !

Students will meet 3 class periods over the first 4 days of this week (& a short class Friday).  Our first class will review the Interim Exam & preview the next lesson.  The next 3 classes will explore the “Age of Expansion” … the period of extreme change in GA between the late 1700’s & the 1st quarter of the 1800’s.  There will be several class activities & attachments added to this posting later.  Use Lesson #13 preview to prepare for a QUIZ Friday.

Week of 10/12-16 … Have a nice Monday off !

Tuesday, after a student holiday, we will continue our study of our nation’s (& our state’s) formation of an early government.  This lesson will continue through Thursday when we will have a short quiz over this Lesson#12 material.  Wednesday, Qtr I grade reports will come home … PLEASE review then, sign & return the grade report envelope.  If you would like a conference (either by phone or in person) please contact the homeroom teacher (or myself).  Friday, our entire 8th grade will go on the Career Fair field trip.  All students who return the permission slip, sent home last week, will attend.  If you have not done so, PLEASE sign & return this light blue form ASAP.  Thanks !

Week of 10/5-9

It is suggested that anyone interested in taking a “retest” over Unit 3.  Students MUST complete the required 2nd remediation attached in eClass.  Unit 3 TEST RETEST Review  Monday we will conclude our review for the Interim Exam.  Tuesday we will take our county Interim Exam on a regular schedule.  Wednesday we will remediate the most frequently missed concepts from the exam.  Thursday we will continue the “Early Gvt” Lesson #12.  Students should be familiar w/ the concepts studied in the attachment.  Early Gvt Lesson Preview  Students should study this for an upcoming QUIZ.  Friday we will enjoy a presentation from a speaker about the American Revolutionary war.

Week of 9/28-10/2

Monday we will review for Tuesday’s Unit 3 TEST.  Students should review assignments #9-11 (see attachments on last week’s posting).  Tuesday we will take our Unit 3 TEST (“Road to Revolution”).  We will review test results & remediate on Wednesday then, begin our preview of the next lesson.  Thursday, we will continue the next lesson on how we (a new independent nation) created its government.  Our Interim Exam has been moved to next Tuesday so, Friday (& Monday) we will review for this.  Study guides will be posted.

Week of 9/21-25

Monday we will continue our lesson (#9 in the SS folder) on Georgia’s “Road to Revolution”.  Tuesday we will continue Monday’s lesson & present student group’s “Trading Cards”.  These were assigned last week & groups divided AKS concepts for this lesson to create flash cards for studying, in preparation for next week’s unit test.  Wednesday & Thursday are “Early Release” days w/ a modified schedule.  SS classes will be in the computer lab to vote in student council elections.  Friday, we will conclude our “R2R” lesson w/ a short Quiz.  Students should use the weekend to study for the test over this material.  As has been done previously, study aids will be attached.  Expect students to be released (Wed. & Thrs.) shortly after 1:15.  Our previously scheduled “Curriculum Night” (which had to be cancelled due to power failure) will be conducted Wednesday, 9/23 from 6:15-8:00.  Conference invitations were sent home to parents last week.  Please return these, if you’d like us to schedule a conference w/ all of your child’s teachers.     R2R Trading Cards
